Bike Panniers

Bicycle panniers for commuting, touring and long-distance travel

Bicycle panniers carry luggage on a rack instead of on the rider’s back. Mounted low on either side of the bicycle, they help distribute the load and leave the rider free to move. They are a practical choice for commuting, shopping, weekend rides and multi-day tours with camping equipment.

Extrawheel is a Polish manufacturer of bicycle touring equipment. The brand has developed its own products since 2005, and the panniers offered today are designed and manufactured in Poland. Individual models differ in capacity, material, construction and mounting system, so the range includes compact bike panniers for commuting as well as large bicycle panniers for touring.

Smaller pannier bags are suitable for work essentials, groceries and short trips. Larger touring panniers provide room for clothing, food, a sleeping bag and camping equipment. Capacity is important, but the mounting system must also fit the rack on the bicycle on which the panniers will be used.

  • 25–30 L – compact sets for commuting, shopping, short trips and a compatible front rack,
  • 50 L (2 × 25 L) – spacious rear panniers for multi-day and long-distance touring,
  • coated polyester or CORDURA® – materials selected for the construction and intended use of each model,
  • fixed or adjustable upper-hook spacing – the right choice depends on the rack and the number of bicycles used,
  • made in Poland, with servicing, spare parts and a 5-year warranty.

Choose bicycle panniers by intended use

Start with the amount of luggage, the usual length of your journeys and the planned mounting position. A large touring set is not always necessary for everyday riding. On the other hand, panniers that are too small can make it difficult to pack clothing, a sleeping bag and camping equipment for a longer journey.

Intended use Recommended Extrawheel models Why consider them? What should you check before buying?
Commuting, shopping and small loads Rambler 25 L A compact set for everyday riding, shopping and shorter tours Hook compatibility, available rack space and heel clearance
Commuting, weekends and versatile use Rider 30 L or Rider Premium 30 L 30 L total capacity, a roll-top closure and HFW-welded construction The fixed spacing of the upper hooks and available rack space
Multi-day touring with complete camping equipment Biker 50 L Large capacity and waterproof HFW-welded construction The fixed hook spacing and compatibility with the rear rack
A lightweight luggage system for long-distance touring Biker Premium 50 L CORDURA®, 50 L total capacity and a pair weight of approximately 1.35 kg The fixed position of the upper hooks and the rack’s permitted load
Different bicycles, an e-bike or an unusual rack Biker PRO 50 L An adjustable Racktime/Tubus system, internal pockets and 50 L touring capacity Tube diameter, rack-stay layout, lower hook position and its higher weight than Biker Premium
Touring with CORDURA® and an adjustable mounting system Wayfarer Premium 50 L Durable textile fabric and continuously adjustable upper hooks Rain protection of the sewn construction and correct adjustment to the rack

If you want to know which bicycle panniers are recommended for a particular bicycle and type of journey, read the detailed guide How to choose bicycle panniers. It compares capacities, materials, mounting systems and the intended uses of individual models in greater detail.

Types of bicycle panniers – Extrawheel models compared

No single model is right for every bicycle and every style of travel. The overview below explains the main differences between the product families in this category. It is not a ranking: each design is intended for a different use and should be assessed against the rack, luggage volume and conditions in which it will be used.

Model Total capacity Material and construction Mounting system Main use
Rambler / Rambler Premium 25 L (2 × 12.5 L) Coated polyester; CORDURA® in the Premium version; sewn construction with protected seams Rixen/KlickFix – adjustable hook spacing Commuting, small loads, shorter trips and a compatible front or rear rack
Rider / Rider Premium 30 L (2 × 15 L) Coated polyester or CORDURA®; HFW-welded construction Rixen & Kaul – fixed upper-hook spacing Everyday riding, weekend trips and versatile use on a compatible front or rear rack
Biker 50 L (2 × 25 L) Coated polyester; HFW-welded construction Rixen & Kaul – fixed upper-hook spacing Everyday riding, cycling holidays and multi-day tours
Biker Premium 50 L (2 × 25 L) CORDURA®; HFW-welded construction; approximately 1.35 kg per pair Rixen & Kaul – fixed upper-hook spacing Lightweight touring equipment and long-distance journeys
Biker PRO / Biker PRO Premium 50 L (2 × 25 L) Coated polyester or CORDURA®; HFW welding and internal pockets Racktime/Tubus – continuously adjustable hooks Frequent touring, e-bikes and fitting the panniers to different racks
Wayfarer / Wayfarer Premium 50 L (2 × 25 L) Coated polyester or CORDURA®; sewn construction with protected seams Racktime/Tubus – continuously adjustable hooks Bicycle touring and riders who prefer an adjustable mounting system

For a model with fixed upper-hook spacing, compare the dimensions stated on the product page with the unobstructed space on your rack. An adjustable system makes fitting easier, but you must still check tube diameter, rack-stay layout, the position of the lower retaining hook and the rack’s permitted load.

Key features of rear rack panniers

Which capacity: 25, 30 or 50 L?

A 25–30 L pair is usually sufficient for commuting, shopping and a weekend trip with a reduced packing list. Rear rack panniers with a total capacity of 50 L are more practical for multi-day journeys carrying clothes, a sleeping bag, tent, food or cooking equipment. When comparing products, check whether the stated volume refers to one pannier or the complete pair.

More capacity does not mean that pannier bags should be filled to the limit with heavy objects. Safe loading also depends on the rack’s weight rating, the strength of the wheel and the bicycle manufacturer’s instructions. Heavy items should be packed low and as close as possible to the wheel axle, with the weight distributed approximately equally between both sides.

Waterproof bicycle panniers and roll-top closures

Water protection depends on the complete construction: the outer material and coating, the way the panels are joined, seam protection or welding, and correct closure. A roll-top must be rolled the number of times specified in the instructions and secured with its buckles. Protection during heavy rain does not automatically mean that a bag is designed for prolonged submersion.

Selected Extrawheel models use high-frequency welding (HFW). Joining the material layers without conventional stitching reduces potential water-entry points. In sewn designs, protection from rain also depends on the construction and sealing of the seams and on closing the pannier correctly. This distinction is important when comparing waterproof bicycle panniers with models intended for general weather protection.

Coated polyester or CORDURA®?

Coated polyester has a smooth, easy-to-clean surface and works well in welded constructions. CORDURA® used in bike bags is valued for abrasion resistance, low weight and its textile surface. The material name alone does not determine waterproofness; coating, construction of the complete pannier and closure method are equally important.

In practice, material and construction should be considered together. For daily use, easy cleaning and protection in changeable weather may be the priorities. On a long tour, weight, resistance to abrasion, repairability and the availability of replacement hooks and other mounting parts become more important.

Fixed or adjustable upper-hook spacing?

Fixed hook spacing is a straightforward solution but requires an accurate compatibility check. Continuously adjustable hooks can be moved along their rail, which can make it easier to use the same bike panniers on several bicycles or on a rack with an unusual stay layout. In both cases, check the lower retaining hook and heel clearance while pedalling.

Before buying, measure the rack-tube diameter and the unobstructed space for the upper hooks. Rack stays, an e-bike battery, lights and cables must not interfere with the mounting system. After the first installation, each pannier must lock securely, remain stable on uneven surfaces and stay clear of the wheel and braking system.

Rear panniers and front panniers

Rear panniers offer the largest capacity and are the traditional choice for touring with a luggage rack. Two separate compartments make it easier to organise clothing, food, camping equipment and items needed during the ride. A correctly packed pair supports stable handling and leaves the top platform of the rack available for another light load.

Smaller, versatile front panniers can be mounted on a compatible low-rider or front rack. On a long journey, they help distribute equipment between the front and rear wheels. Before fitting them, check the mounting system, the permitted front-rack load and clearance around the wheel, handlebar and brake hoses or cables.

Bikepacking bags attach directly to the frame, handlebar and seat post. They suit bicycles without a conventional rack and lightweight riding away from paved roads. When greater volume, quick removal and convenient access to equipment matter more, full-size touring panniers remain a practical solution.

Bicycle panniers made in Poland – servicing and spare parts

Extrawheel bicycle panniers are made in Poland at the company’s own facility in Harklowa. Direct control of production supports consistent workmanship and allows products to be developed using practical experience. Learn more about the brand, its history and place of manufacture on the About Extrawheel page.

The products are covered by a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty. Servicing and selected replacement parts for bicycle panniers, including hooks and components for different mounting systems, allow a worn part to be replaced instead of requiring the purchase of a new set. This is particularly valuable for touring equipment used regularly over many seasons.

FAQ – buying and using bicycle panniers

Are Extrawheel bicycle panniers sold as a pair?

The capacities of 25, 30 and 50 L stated in this category refer to sets of two separate panniers. Before ordering, always check the product name, package contents and technical specification of the selected colour or version.

Do bicycle panniers fit every luggage rack?

No. Before purchase, check the rack-tube diameter, fixed spacing or adjustment range of the upper hooks, rack-stay layout, lower retaining hook, permitted load and heel clearance. E-bikes and racks with an unusual construction require particular attention.

Can one pannier from a pair be used on its own?

Yes. The sets consist of two independent bags that can be mounted separately. A single pannier is convenient for commuting or a small shopping trip. With a heavier load, distribute the weight as evenly as possible between both sides of the bicycle.

Do waterproof panniers need a rain cover?

Correctly manufactured and closed waterproof models do not require an additional rain cover in typical rainfall. Follow the instructions for rolling and fastening the closure. Protection during a rainy ride is not the same as resistance to prolonged submersion.

Can the hooks and mounting parts be replaced?

Selected hooks, adapters and other components are available as replacement parts. Identify the pannier model and mounting system before ordering because parts from different versions are not necessarily compatible.

How long is the warranty?

Extrawheel panniers are covered by a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty. The shop’s warranty information explains the detailed terms, correct use and the procedure for making a claim.

How should rear rack panniers be prepared for the first ride?

After installing the empty panniers, check the upper-hook locks, position of the lower retaining hook, and clearance from the wheel and heel. Pack the luggage evenly and take a short test ride. Our practical guide explains how to pack bicycle panniers properly.
