Bicycle bags can be mounted on the handlebars, frame, fork, rear rack or beneath the saddle. Panniers are a type of bike bag that attaches to the sides of a front or rear rack. Which type of bike bag should you choose?

Bikepacking bags

Bikepacking bags let you spread your gear across several mounting points. Frame bags use the space inside the main frame triangle, while top tube bags keep smaller items accessible. Seat packs provide storage beneath the saddle, and fork bags require suitable mounts and a check of the permitted load. Choose your setup to suit the bike's geometry, the length of your trip and the amount of equipment you actually need.

Handlebar bags

Handlebar bags provide a convenient place for your phone, documents, camera or snacks. Check the mounting system, bag dimensions and clearance around the brake levers and cables. The bag should allow the handlebars to turn freely and be easy to remove when you stop.

Gravel panniers

Choose panniers for gravel riding to match a compatible rack and the way you plan to travel. Lightweight CORDURA® models can form part of a setup for gravel rides and longer tours. Compare the weight of the pair, capacity and mounting system, and check that your heels clear the bags when pedalling. The fabric alone does not determine whether a pannier will fit your bike.

Rack-top bags

Rack-top bags sit on the upper platform of a rear rack, using the space above the back wheel. With a compatible setup, they can complement side panniers. Check the platform width, mounting requirements and the total weight of the bags and their contents against the rack's load limit.

Cargo and longtail bike bags

Cargo and longtail bike bags help organise shopping, work essentials and larger everyday loads. The dimensions of the carrying area, support beneath the bag and compatibility with the rack or platform are particularly important. This is another area in which we are developing the Extrawheel range.

How to choose bike bags for your needs

• Mounting position: measure the available space. A bag should not interfere with pedalling, steering or braking.
• Capacity: match the volume to what you carry. When comparing panniers, check whether the capacity in litres refers to one bag or a complete pair.
• Attachment: check the required bracket, rack or mounting points and the limits specified for the individual model.
• Everyday use: consider access to your belongings, how often you remove the bag, its weight and how it can be cleaned and serviced.

Bike bag materials and protection from water

Bike bags offer different levels of protection from water. Our waterproof handlebar bags protect their contents from rain when properly closed. Check the stated performance of each model when choosing your setup. Protection depends on the complete construction: the fabric, seams or welded joints, closure and attachment points. We use materials including coated polyester and CORDURA®, selected for the purpose of each design.

In selected models, we use 3D HFW high-frequency welding to join coated fabric without stitching through the welded area. In sewn designs, seam protection also matters. Questions about choosing bike bags

Do bike bags need a luggage rack?

It depends on the design. Panniers and rack-top bags need a compatible rack. Many frame bags, handlebar bags and seat packs use other mounting systems. Always check the requirements of the model you choose.

Will one bag fit every bike?

No. Fit depends on the bag's dimensions, the geometry of the bike and the mounting system. Check clearance from the wheel, cables, your legs and other equipment, as well as the permitted load at the mounting point.

Can I use a handlebar bag together with panniers?

Yes, provided both are correctly fitted. A handlebar bag can hold smaller items you need at stops, while panniers carry your main equipment. Distribute the load within the limits of your bike and its components.
